Trees of life

Love nature? And more specifically forests? How about trees? Then there is little doubt in my mind that you’ll love this book, written by archaeologist, television presenter, and woodsman Max Adams.

Publisher: Princeton University Press
Author: Max Adams
Price: $40.99
ISBN: 978-0691212739
Year: 2021
Format: Hardcover, 272 pages

The book profiles 80 tree species out of the roughly 60,000 known species worldwide. There are six thematic sections in the book, including trees that yield practical value, those that provide dyes, essences and medicine, trees that provide food, a section on trees that are of such value to humanity that they must be protected from loss, and a section on ‘Supertrees’ that the author hopes “…will encourage readers to learn more about these givers of life on which we rely so much…”

Reading this book reinforced, for me, how trees have been, and continue to be, of such immense importance in the the development and sustaining of human cultures across most of the planet.

This is an enthralling, wonderfully illustrated book that celebrates the wonder of trees.
